A Christmas Barrel From My Daughter: Caribbean Tradition, Wrapped in Blue Plastic and a Whole Lot of Love

The Sweetest Christmas Announcement

Every Caribbean family with relatives “inna foreign” knows the season has officially started when you hear the magical phrase:
“Mommy, the barrel on the way!”

My daughter, living in the USA, has once again upheld our beloved Christmas tradition—sending a blue barrel packed with goodies, love, and enough supplies to stock a mini-mart.

Blue Barrel of Joy

If you grew up in the Caribbean, you know the blue barrel is not just a container—it’s a cultural icon.
It’s our version of Santa’s sleigh, except rounder, heavier, and wrapped with yards of packing tape.

Inside it, you’ll usually find treasures like:

  • Rice, flour, and all the staples
  • Tin stuff galore, with the legendary tomato sauce not to be outdone😅, barbecue sauce, ketchup and A1 steak sauce
  • Toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, soap (freshness for the whole year)😜
  • Dishwashing liquid and detergents with fancy names (the good, good stuff)
  • Chocolates, candies, gums, chips, popcorn and the beloved box cake mix
  • And of course, a few last-minute pantry grabs to fill every nook and cranny… my favourite is the roll of strong garbage bags with the red drawstring 😅(if you know, you know)

The Shopping Olympics

Before the barrel even arrives, a full American shopping marathon takes place.

There’s always:

  • A Walmart run
  • A Target run “just for one thing”
  • A BJ’s or Sam’s Club haul
  • Coupon missions
  • And the infamous moment: “Lemme just take two tins from my pantry so the barrel can full up!”

Packing the barrel becomes a comedy—sit, shove, press, tape—repeat. Then she calls the shipping company, and off it goes on its noble voyage across the sea.

Proof of Love (And Photos!)

This year, my daughter did it again. Barrel packed tightly, photographed proudly, and ready for shipping.
I have the pictures to prove it—evidence of her love, effort, and dedication to keeping this tradition alive.

More Than Gifts—It’s Connection

Every time I receive a barrel, I’m reminded that it’s more than food and supplies.
It’s love delivered in the most practical, Caribbean way:
Wrapped in blue plastic, sealed in tape, and shipped with joy.

Here’s to the yearly Christmas barrel—
A symbol of family, care, tradition, and holiday cheer.
I can’t wait to open mine!
